Composition of "City Scales"
“City Scales” is a sculptural composition which shows
us the way of weighing goods near Minsk Town Hall of the 16th century. If there occurred
weigh misunderstandings, any dweller could ask for a fair measurement at the
Town Hall City Scales. Nowadays the “City Scales”
sculpture depicts two dwellers and a Town Hall representative. The figures appear really realistic. Looking at the
crooked bag of one of the man you can imagine how heavy the bags are. Tiny
details of the outfit add much to the image of the old Minsk city life.
You can also see plaques with important notes which few travelers can recollect after a few seconds after reading them. Anyway, “City Scales” play cultural, historical and esthetical roles. Absolutely worth seeing.
One of the plaques reads something like: "The city of Minsk, having received self-government in 1499 in accordance with Magdeburg Rights, began to develop rapidly as a center of handicrafts and trade, introduced the standards of the European metric system, and received permission to install city scales, as well as for tax collection."
