The dog rose, or rosa canina in Latin, is a popular plant which has been widely used in traditional medicine.

A dog rose shrub may grow up to 1-4 m high. The stems have sharp prickles, pinnate leaves and pink, purple or white flowers. After blooming there appear rose-hips which are usually red-orange.

The dog rose grows in Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa. It can be seen in the woodland, scrubland or gardens.



Time of blooming of the dog rose


First flowers of the dog rose usually appear in May and June. You can easily distinguish the dog rose from other kinds of rose, as its flowers have got 5 petals and they are comparatively big reaching 5 cm in diameter.


Useful qualities of the dog rose

While flowers of the dog rose play an esthetic role, its hips contain vitamin C. What is more, a couple of hips contain a daily dose of vitamin which is necessary for a person. Besides, there is potassium, phosphorus, iron and manganese.

Usage


Hips can be used for preparing jam, jelly, syrups, a tea substitute and so on. The dog rose hips also give wine spiciness and special aroma. Fruits may be consumed fresh or dried.

However, there are plenty of contraindications. People with gastritis, a peptic ulcer of a stomach and a duodenum should avoid eating the dog rose fruits because of the high content of ascorbic acid.
