Anemometer
Wind Speed Meter
anemometer in town |
Have you ever
seen an anemometer?
An anemometer is
an ordinary weather station gadget. You can see it attached to the post on the
bridge or any other constructions. Some people place it on the roofs of their
houses.
What does an anemometer do?
Anemometers gauge
the speed of wind. Some of them can even calculate the direction of wind.
Who uses anemometers professionally?
First of all,
anemometers are important for meteorologists and climatologists. As wind speed
helps extreme weather, like storms, for that reason an anemometer is needed to engineers
and pilots. The device is also essential to the work of scientists who study
air movements.
How does an anemometer work?
You might have
noticed that city anemometers have three or four cups fixed on horizontal arms.
The arms are placed on an upright rod. If the wind blows, the cups spin. Thus, an
anemometer counts the number of spins and gauges the speed of wind.
A bit of history
The term “anemometer”
is derived from the Greek word “anemos” which stands for “wind”. Though the
first description of the tool was given in the 15th century by Leon Battista
Alberti, the anemometer is stated to be invented in 1846 by John Thomas Romney
Robinson, a British Scientist.
