Merhaba, Kalkan! (Hello, Kalkan!)
A cozy Mediterranean town on the picturesque turquoise
coast of Turkey, Kalkan nests around the harbour at the foot of the Taurus
Mountains.

A glimpse of history
Kalkan was settled by both Greek and Turkish people
about 200 years ago. It was also known by its Greek name Kalamaki. During the 19th century Kalkan was an important port. The
settlement grew and flourished step by step, however, due to the improvement of
the road system in 1950-s, sea trading was no longer possible and people had to
move to larger cities in search of work. Luckily in 1960-s wealthy English
yachtsmen were attracted by the harbor of Kalkan. Nowadays, tourism plays one
of the major roles in the economy of the town.

Why Kalkan?
Central beach, Greek
style narrow streets, numerous restaurants and friendly people make Kalkan very
special. For landscape
photographers it is a very attractive spot, as the town of Kalkan faces a bay
with scenic islands resting in the gleaming sea. Architecture lovers will be
pleased by well-preserved authentic buildings, whitewashed houses covered by bougainvillea,
a Greek church (later converted into a mosque), steep brick roads and paths.
New villas, local shops and unique atmosphere add to the scenery.

Food
Food is fresh, simple and nourishing. If you are a
vegetarian, you are in the right place. Kalkan is full of greengrocery shops
with delicious natural fruit and vegetables all year round. Fish is another
cultural point. It is always fresh, right out of the sea. Go buy and enjoy. The
seller would even scale, gut and portion the chosen fish for you.

Special Dwellers of Kalkan
Like in Crete there are a lot of dogs near different
shops in Kalkan. While the Cretan dogs are small and independent, Kalkan’s dogs
seem to be huge bark-lovers. Don’t panic, they do not bite. Big doesn’t mean
angry. Usually they are as friendly as the shop owners.
Kalkan is popular among British tourists. Though even
in winter you may see a Russian swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. No comment.

Recollection of Kalkan
Kalkan is rich in numerous birds, plants and trees. Flowers
bloom in February what makes a great opportunity for capturing vivid views. Olives
are right under your feet like leaves in autumn somewhere in Berlin. Just raise
your hand and a fresh lemon will ask you to take it home. Life never ends. Some
plants are always in bloom while others are asleep and bare. Cacti grow enormously
high and they do it everywhere what makes you think that your own dwarf-like cactus
has nothing but a pot which you have to keep warm during a frosty Russian
winter.
