Bulgarian Wine

“Beer is made by men, wine by God.”
                                                                                    Martin Luther

It is not a secret that wine is one of the national drinks in Bulgaria. In its turn, the country is a leading wine producer in the Eastern Europe. Travelling around Bulgaria you can see vineyards in all its parts, except for the region around the capital city Sofia. For example, the Northern Region is well known for its white wine and the Southern Region is famous for reds.

Bulgarian wines are divided into three categories: Standard wines, they are light whites, High Quality Wines, which have no geographical origin sign on their labels but which are sold under a brand name, and Special Wines, they include sparkling, fruit wines of high quality.

As guides say, today a modern wine-making in Bulgaria combines old traditions and advanced technology. Grapes are picked manually, wine is kept in oak tuns.

In local shops and supermarkets you can easily buy table wine for lv 2-3 and higher. (1 lv = 0.5 =$0.7) Be careful in those restaurants where you are offered to try as much free wine as you wish. Anyway it is included into the price of some entertaining program. It is not likely of high quality or of any quality at all. Don’t forget that the only free cheese is in the mouse trap.

Among wines, you can bring from Bulgaria as souvenirs, there are Kadarka, Mavrud, Melnik. You can also find there Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Muscat and Riesling.
